Energy Performance

There is something called ‘U-Value’ which refers to a measure of the heat transmission through a building part (such as a wall or window) or a given thickness of a material (such as insulation). The lower the number the better. The most common type of window in houses in the UK are double glazed, which generally have a U-Value of 2.9, which is high. With just a pair of energy efficient blinds, you can bring this number down to a whopping 2.1. That’s nearly 30% of your energy saved!

Wooden shutters can do even better by bringing your U-Value down to 1.9. These numbers do depend on the glazing and size of the window, and the material used for the window blind. Even so it is a great option to keep your house energy efficient instead of replacing your windows with more energy efficient ones. Overall investing in a high-quality pair of blinds or a good wooden shutter will end up benefiting you.

Capricorn Blinds have a large selection of shading products which can help with insulation and solar heat control. Here you can find out more about the energy performance of different blind types and how they can have a positive impact on your energy bills. We recommend taking a look at our conservatory blind collection here for our vast collection of energy efficient materials. Our Cellular range uses an intelligent honeycomb shape fabric to help retain the heat during winter and block the heat from entering the room during the summer months.

The darker the blind the better it is at stopping heat and light transmitting through them, so we recommend darker fabrics for areas in the home where you want good light control. The lighter blinds in our Cellular range do usually come with dimout fabrics which are great for reducing the majority of light filtering through, while still letting some natural light into the room.

For more information on our energy efficient shading products, please feel free to come down to our showroom in Shirley and we will happily explain how our shading solutions can help you save your energy and stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It’s a scientific fact that heat is attracted to cold. In winter months, indoor heating moves toward and escapes through windows to the outdoors, while in summertime, the outside heat flows into your home through the same windows. At Capricorn we have many different blind types and fabrics that boast high U-values—the measure of a product’s ability to resist heat flow—helping reduce energy consumption, save on heating and cooling costs, and creating a more comfortable room setting.

Let’s recap on some of the major points made in this article:

  • U-Value refers to a measure of heat transmission through a building part or a given thickness of a material.
  • Both Blinds and Shutters can help to bring down the U-Value
  • The darker the blind the better it is at stopping heat and light transmitting through them
  • Many of our products here at Capricorn are designed to reduce the amount of solar heat that passes through the window, which is known as the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)
  • The lower the SHGC, the more protected your home is from the sun’s heat.

We can use the latest software within the industry to give you indicative energy saving values for your specific windows and blinds. For more information, please ask in store or feel free to give us a call on 0121 772 5366
