What is Intelligent Shading?

This term refers to the automated control system for Smart Home shading products which take into account factors such as lighting levels, pre-set timers and temperature to determine the opening and closing of the window blind or curtain.

What Factors Can Influence Shading Control?

There are a number of factors that you may wish to consider when designing the control logic of your shading products, including:

Internal Temperature – When the window blind and curtains are connected to a central control hub such as the Somfy TaHoma Smart Hub, an indoor temperature sensor can be added to influence the shading products. For example, in the summer you could programme for the blinds and curtains to close if the temperature exceeds a certain value to stop further heat gain. If you have a home heating system such as Nest or Hive the reading from these devices can be used.

External Temperature – Similar to the internal temperature you may wish the external temperature to be the influencing control factor. The smart blind control system can take readings from sensors on the same system, be integrated with other compatible controls directly, or co-ordinate using various apps such as IFTTT (If This Then That). External temperature readings may be particularly relevant to externally fixed products such as patio awnings.

Timings – The solar shading control system can be programmed in several ways based simply on the time of day. For example, you can set groups of shades to raise at sunrise and close at sunset. There are endless possibilities to suit you preferences.

Cameras & Motion Sensors – Movement of the blinds and curtains can be triggered by motion sensors and smart cameras (such as Google Nest Cam) to help deter potential intruders.

Alarm Sensors – The smart home blinds can be triggered to move upon an alarm activation. An example of this is you could set a scenario so if the smoke alarm is triggered, all of the blinds and curtains will open so that emergency services can easily see into all the rooms.

Lighting Levels – An advantage of an intelligent shading system is that you can setup the blinds to open and close based on the light level using a lux sensor. This is ideal if you need to prevent glare in a room or want to protect furniture from strong sunlight.

Lights – In addition to the above, by having an smart home shading and lighting system (such as Philips Hue, Lightwave RF and more) you can ensure that the optimum light level is maintained in a room as the lights are automatically dimmed and brightened to maintain your preferred light level. This can result in significant energy savings and increase the life span of your light bulbs!
